Frequently Asked Questions
What is Northland Elite?
Northland Elite is a traveling boys & girls basketball club consisting of middle school and high school aged players from across northern Wisconsin, the Upper Penisula of Michigan, and northwest Iowa. Teams compete during the late spring and summer months. The club serves as an opportunity for players in this largely rural area to continue to play basketball in the offseason.
Is Northland Elite for me?
Being a part of the club requires a commitment to your teammates and coaches to make every effort to be at every practice and tournament. Players with jobs must be able to schedule their shifts AROUND basketball practice and tournaments. For high school students, Northland Elite Basketball Club targets driven, college-bound athletes who want to work hard to improve their skills and put themselves in a better position athletically and socially. The competition at the tournaments is high-level and unfortunately not suited for everyone.
How do you form your teams?
Players will be evaluated by coaches during tryouts. Coaches and advisors will determine the rosters within a few days of the tryouts, and each athlete's parent contact will be informed accordingly. If there are additional roster spots available after tryouts, they will be filled as determined by the club director and coaches.
How long is the season?
Beginning in 2020, we are aiming to keep all of our teams' seasons at about 10 weeks from the first practice to the last tournament. Different teams play different schedules based on player availability, skill level, and willingness to play more tournaments.
How often do you practice and where?
Practices are 1-2 times per week and locations vary depending on the team make-up. Most teams practice on Sundays and Wednesdays. WI/MI teams have practiced in Ashland, Park Falls, Hurley, Ironwood, Wakefield, and Baraga. Iowa teams practice in Storm Lake. You must be willing and able to travel to practices or make arrangements for your child to car pool to practices.
When and where do your teams play games?
Tournaments can be during the months of April, May, June, and July. The base fee will cover a set number of tournaments, but additional tournaments may be entered depending on team interest and fundraising. Northland Elite has attended tournaments in the Twin Cities, Appleton, Eau Claire, Green Bay, La Crosse, Madison, Menomonie, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, St. Cloud, Superior, Waukesha, and Wisconsin Dells.
How much does it cost to play?
The club fee is in the $600-800 range depending on the final schedule, plus about $125 if you need to purchase a new uniform. This fee covers tournament entry fees, practices, administrative fees, and helps offset coaches' travel expenses.
Are there any hidden costs?
The only “hidden” costs are your own travel expenses, lodging, and meals. Players often will rideshare to practices and tournaments and lodge together.
Who coaches your teams?
All coaches at Northland Elite are volunteers comprised of experienced College, High School, and Youth-level coaches.
What if my son or daughter has schedule conflicts?
We understand schedule conflicts arise during a busy spring and summer. However, acceptance into the Northland Elite Basketball Club comes with the expectation that the athlete will make every effort to attend all practices and tournaments. Failure to live up to this expectation could result in reassignment within the club or removal from the club without refund.
